Knitted Elastic does not narrow when it is stretched, and does not lose its stretch or shape retention when sewn through. The cut ends will usually 'run' or 'fray' (use an anti-fray product), but we have recently learned of a new product that does not fray - we'll let you know what we find out! Knitted elastic is normally cheaper than either braided or woven elastic.

Braided Elastic narrows when it is stretched. It will lose its stretch and shape retention when it's sewn through, but the cut ends do not 'run' or 'fray'. Braided elastic has distinctive, length-wise ribs.

Woven Elastic does not narrow when it is stretched, does not lose its stretch or shape retention when it's sewn through, and the cut ends do not 'run' or 'fray'. Woven elastic is generally much thicker and stronger than knitted or braided elastics. It has both cross-wise and length-wise ribs. Woven elastic is generally higher cost than either knitted or braided elastic.

Calendered Elastic is usually a braided elastic with a width-wise wide-rib pattern. 'Calendered' simply means the elastic has been pressed between 2 very heavy rollers to 'emboss' a pattern onto the elastic's surface. The pattern can actually be anything, from the typical width-wise ribbing to an intricate logo or brand-name.

Clear Elastic is a non-rubber, man-made polyurethane (plastic) product. It does not lose its stretch or shape retention when it's sewn through or pierced. Although it works very well in certain applications, it does have some drawbacks. Overall, we tend to prefer a more 'traditional' elastic product.

Stretch is overall amount of stretch an elastic has. It is usually shown as a percentage, which tells you how much the elastic will stretch beyond it's unstretched length.
For instance, a 10-inch piece of elastic with 120% stretch will stretch 12 inches, to 22 inches:
  10 inches x 120% (or 10 inches x 1.2) = 12 inches   so, 10 inches + 12 inches = 22 inches
