Fabrics - Bengalines

This page lists our selections of first-quality Bengaline and Waterfaille, in a rainbow of colors.

Fabric Sample Cards are listed on the Main Fabrics page.
The Bengaline card is currently 'in transition' - we are expanding our in-stock selection of Bengaline and Waterfaille, and will soon have separate cards for each.

Bengaline Color Chart
Waterfaille Color Chart
The charts are very rough and somewhat incomplete, and are meant to be used as very general guides only.

See below for a (very rough) photograph comparing the textures of Bengaline, Waterfaille, and Moiré Bengaline.

A few words (and caveats) about Bengaline and Waterfaille colors:
Bengaline and Waterfaille colors come and go to suit various fashions and seasons. What's 'hot' right now may be unavailable in just a few months. (For instance, Peach bengaline was available last year in a variety of shades, but this year it's very hard to find.) Plus, each manufacturer and mill has their own color chart and naming convention, and each strives to be unique. So 'French Blue' from one mill will probably be slightly different than another's, or even from one dye lot to another from the same mill. We strive for consistency in our products, but we have no control over these factors.

Please be sure of the amount and color you need when you order.
Once cut, it's yours, and cannot be returned.

Special Shipping Note for All Fabric Customers
Our shipping rates are 'close estimates' only, and are based on order-value. We may recalculate your actual shipping costs as necessary depending on the amount of fabric you order, the package weight and size, and the destination of your order. For instance, Bengaline weighs over 1/2-pound per yard, so even 2 yards will have a higher shipping cost than our 'standard' shipping-rate.

'By-the-Bolt' Shipping Notes for International (non-USA) Customers
If you are ordering any of our fabrics 'By-the-Bolt', your shipping options may be somewhat limited. For all non-USA destinations, the USPS imposes package-size and weight restrictions, and other carriers may impose other restrictions. You should contact us for shipping options, estimated cost, and limitations.

For many non-USA destinations, it may actually be less expensive to order 'by the yard', at the 'per yard' price. But please note, the fabric will simply be folded into a box, as neatly as possible. For some destinations, we may have to cut the fabric into more than 1 piece, and ship in more than 1 box.

Bengaline  -  Color Chart
60-inch or 50-inch width, cotton/Rayon or cotton/Acetate, not moiré (no 'waves').
A high-quality grosgrain fabric, heavier than many failles, but not stiff or too heavy - perfect for bodices. Note, this is NOT the cheap polyester stuff! However, the fabric content (rayon vs acetate) depends on what comes from the mill - we have no control over this.
Important Note - 60-inch vs. 50-inch widths:
Our Bengaline suppliers are converting to 60-inch width as they replace their current inventory. And we in turn are trying to order only 60-inch width -- but this is not always possible. Sometimes we receive 50-inch, sometimes 60-inch -- we have No Control over this !!
When you order Bengaline, you should order the 60-inch width, but also let us know how much yardage you want if we can only supply the 50-inch.

Shipping Notes - Please Read:
Bengaline weighs over 1/2-pound per yard! A 25-yard bolt of 60-inch weighs about 17 pounds (50 yards is about 35 pounds, 100 yards is about 70 pounds).
Bolts are shipped rolled-on-tube, full-width (25-yard bolt is approx 62in x 4in x 4in). Bolts are wrapped in several layers of heavy-duty plastic, and heavily taped.
Regardless, you should expect some possible minor damage to the ends and/or outer layer (but not enough to affect use).
Shipping Cost Examples - as of November 2012, shipping a single 25-yard bolt
  to nearby Virginia is approximately: $29 via UPS Ground, $23 via USPS Priority;
  to across-the-country California is approximately: $43 via UPS Ground, $52 via USPS Priority;
but to across-the-country Alaska & Hawaii is approximately: $102 via UPS Ground, $52 via USPS Priority.
International: As of November 2012, shipping a single 25-yard bolt to Victoria BC (Canada) is approximately: $50 via UPS Ground, $67 via USPS Priority. But shipping to continents other than North America is very expensive (can cost several hundred dollars).
The shipping rates stated above are estimated examples only, as of November 2012. Your actual shipping cost will definitely be different. Shipping charges may change at any time.

Bengaline vs. Waterfaille vs. Moiré Bengaline

bengaline vs waterfaille vs moire
From left to right: Bengaline, Waterfaille, Moiré Benglaine
(sigh... the fabric just does not photograph well)

Bengaline is a grosgrain fabric, with low narrow ribs running across it's width.
Waterfaille is also a grosgrain fabric, but the ribbing is randomly higher and lower across the fabric's surface, adding a really nice texture and giving a 'waterfall' effect that changes with the lighting and angle of view.
Moiré Bengaline has an effect running lengthwise on the fabric, giving it a shimmering, wavy, 'woodgrain' appearance that changes with the lighting and angle of view.

Our access to many of the largest New York, North Carolina, Los Angeles, and European fabric mills, houses, and importers allows us to order from a wide-ranging selection, and we are always adding new and exciting variations to our inventory.

So, give us a call if you're looking for a costuming fabric or a color you don't see on these pages - if we don't have it, we can usually find it for you pretty quick. (Minimum order amounts will depend on the fabric and the mill, and may range from a few yards to a full bolt.)
