In general, "Maker" shoes come in five basic shapes - tapered, tapered-to-average, average, average-to-square, and square - and 3 basic weights - light, average, and heavy. (Please note, these descriptions are very subjective and very relative).

We keep a list of the current makers and the type of shoe each makes - 'tapered, heavy weight', 'square, average weight', etc., and we try to keep in stock a selection of shoes from several different makers in varying sizes, weights, and shapes. In many cases, more than one maker may build a similar shoe, and we can often help you with substitutions if we don't have, or you can't locate, a specific maker.

Several of the more favored cobblers have retired, and many others have become 'restricted' to crafting shoes for current customers only, or have cut-back their production, and now have delivery times of 4, 6, 10 months or more. We keep a list of the current, active, and restricted makers, with an estimate of delivery times.

We fax our Maker-Search Orders to Freed in New York once a week. We do not know what is in-stock with Freed until the shipment arrives a few days later. 'Maker-search orders' with Freed are automatically cancelled if not filled (Freed does not back-order maker shoes), so we will continue to re-order these shoes every week (for no longer than 2 months) until received or until you cancel the order. Please note: after 2 months, your order will be cancelled, and you must re-submit a new order if you want us to keep trying.

If you know more than one maker you can wear, we will search our own inventory for any of those makers, or we can ask Freed to ship any combination of those makers. If you know just a general shape and/or weight you prefer to wear, we can select one or more makers that build your preferred style of shoe.

If you have one specific maker you absolutely must have, your best bet is to call or email us to inquire availability before you order. We can let you know our own in-stock status fairly quick, and we can inquire availability from Freed (though it may require a few days for a response).

Freed 'special make-up' shoes are built by a specific maker to your specifications, including (but not limited to) extra glue in the box, cut down heels, 1/4 sizes, specific vamp lengths, extra strong shanks, and much more - the possibilities are practically endless. The cost for this service is an additional $20.00 per pair.

We will happily process Freed 'maker special-orders' and 'special make-up' orders on request. The order must be prepaid in full. Once placed, the order cannot be cancelled. We will make every attempt to determine availability and delivery time from Freed prior to placing your order. We do recommend, but not require, a minimum order of 6 pairs, since special orders and special make-up orders can take from several weeks to several months to receive.

Please Note: we highly recommend you place 'maker special-orders' and 'special make-up' orders only from a maker you have already worn and are familiar with.
